How can we make a film about an alien invasion in our time attract attention, be non-formulaic and interesting? The first component can be attributed to a visual range and an unusual setting. For the second, there is a plot that does not follow the usual rut, but surprises with unexpected decisions or captures with its intrigue. For the third, if you did not cope with the first and second points, well-written characters.

Do you remember the "Edge of the Future"? This movie has all three components of a good movie about how aliens are trying to capture us. Hopefully, the announced second part of Edge of Tomorrow will be no worse than the first. Although the first one had a powerful foundation in the form of ranobe and manga, in which there is no sequel, so the sequel "On the verge of the future" will already be completely a figment of the imagination of Hollywood screenwriters. And this can significantly affect the film.

Maybe you've already noticed that I still haven't started reviewing Independence Day 2. And, in principle, there is a reason for this.
The movie disappointed me.

"If Independence Day" was&"Transformers", then "Independence Day: Rebirth" will be&Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen - more Autobots, Decepticons, special effects, action, destruction. Well, that's not so bad. It will be bad if there is more pretentious pathos and meaningless dialogues.".

But let's take it in order.

The visual component

"Spectacular enough for a sequel to an apocalyptic 1996 film, and enchanting. You'll have a great time and you won't even miss Will Smith." - Empire.

All right. The special effects in Roland Emmerich's film are incredible. The picture captures. It doesn't just capture - it impresses with its scale, coverage of the territory of contemplation. Emmerich knows how to create and demonstrate colossal fantastic images and concepts, and if there is still a chance to cause a catastrophe of planetary proportions, then hold Emmerich seven times - you still can't hold him.

The invasion, the destruction of the world, and the big battle scenes between humans and aliens are simply epic, there's no other way to say it. Independence Day: Resurgence is the best fantasy film because of the special effects and scale.

Setting

"Even if Independence Day seems ridiculous and silly to you, it will still remain bright and packed with special effects. As a fan feed for Roland Emmerich, "Independence Day" fully justifies itself, but it doesn't reveal anything new." - ScreenDaily.

And here's the first problem of the film - we don't learn much about the world twenty years after the alien invasion. Yes, there are new technologies that allow you to quickly travel not only around the planet, but also in space. There is a base on the moon (and beyond).

New weapons, new fighters, new ones... And what else? But nothing. That's nothing at all. Something flying on an anti-gravity mechanism will flash in one frame, and then people will drive cars and buses throughout the film. Does this mean that all the latest technology is only in the army? Maybe society has split into the military caste, which gets all the buns, and the caste of ordinary citizens, who are allowed to use only old equipment? Maybe there is a new world ideology that has subjugated all the world's social networks and established an information dictatorship, because it is necessary to prepare the planet for a new invasion? Maybe a religion has emerged that considers aliens to be messengers of the end of the world, and now fanatics, having gained access to alien weapons, threaten the peace of the world?

No. Nothing like that. In 20 years, only the armed forces have changed. But what about politics? Public relations? Cultural traditions? The world as a whole? All nations fraternized, and everyone began to respect July 4 as Independence Day. And what, for twenty years, the United Kingdom did not want to leave the new union, believing that it was feeding everyone? I don't believe it after Brexit.

And if there are problem areas in the new harmonious world, then we won't know about them. Only one will be in the movie, which is presented in the trailer, the one in Africa, where David Levinson went to see the alien ship. But it's not exactly problematic either, it's just depicted for the sake of the plot.

In fact, the whole world on Independence Day: Rebirth is the same world as on Independence Day. It's just that the military has new guns and planes. And if at first Emmerich's large-scale canvases distract attention from that fact, then gradually it becomes noticeable, especially during and after the invasion, when cities are destroyed, civilization is dying, and new technologies are not used in any way to save and protect people. In general, we won't see any people against the background of this disaster, just some extras whose main function is to die in a crowd. Emmerich creates with broad strokes, and there is no place for details in his creation.

Plot.

"There's too much action, everything happens too fast, and the overall impression is like watching a two-hour trailer - it's more tiring than impressive." - Time Out London.

Actually, that's not quite true. The title of the film and the trailer showed that it is worth waiting for the same pattern as in the previous film - the appearance of aliens, battles with them, regrouping forces, the decisive battle. But even this scheme could be made more interesting by adding new elements or developing old ones. As a last resort, we were offered a new weapon, but, in principle, it does not provide advantages in a new conflict. New characters can also be attributed to this category, but more on them later.

But, there's a really new element to the movie. I won't talk about it, because it will be a spoiler, I'll just note that it is precisely because of this element that the first part of the film is really interesting, there is intrigue, the plot differs from the story of the first film. In addition to this, there is a visual sequence - and the film seems to be almost the best fantasy film.

And then the second part of the movie begins. And the problems of the tape become more expressive, because Independence Day: Resurgence not only simplifies to repeating the scheme of the first film (not literally, of course), but also spoils the really interesting and new element that was introduced to the film, reducing it to a simple plot template. And the aliens are reduced to a banal fantasy stereotype. Basically, the second part of the film is a stamp on a stamp and drives a stamp. And it gets boring here, because "Independence Day 2" will no longer amaze you, but will only exploit special effects known both from the film itself and from other fantasy films.

Characters

"This is not just a lazily written script, it's close to losing its common sense altogether."Rebirth"inflates alien invasions to a senseless scale, long lines of honking cars and helicopter rescues from rooftops seem like microscopic nonsense."- The Telegraph.

We were promised young heroes, a new generation, a generation that would face a new attack from outer space with dignity. Well, as for youth, at least they told the truth here.

Most of the actors in the film (the vast majority, I emphasize this) do not play, but perform functions. And that's what's important - most of them in the movie are just superfluous. On Independence Day, every character mattered, influenced the plot. Several storylines with different characters in the 1996 film looked exactly like the storylines, intersected and thus created an interesting story. These were the guns themselves, firing when needed and where needed. In general, if you remove a number of characters, the film will not lose anything. Rather, he even wins.

The young generation is just faded. No one has Will Smith's charisma level, and you can feel it. But trying to play on nostalgia doesn't do much either. The characters from the first film look like they're mentally ill.

In a fantasy film, dialogues have two functions: to reveal the fantasy component and to reveal the characters. The film copes with the first function more or less, but only because it is a sequel and it does not need to explain the fantastic assumption for a long time.

But the second function is just a horror. Firstly, because it's not the characters that are revealed, but the functions, and this leads to mechanical interaction. Secondly, the dialogues are formulaic.

There is nothing interesting in the second film. The irony that was an integral part of Independence Day and softened the ridiculous jokes that are simply missing from Independence Day 2.

My Independence Day: Resurgence rating is 5 out of 10.

But understand. I was disappointed with the high bar he set at the beginning, and how he brought it down. If you just want to watch a blockbuster movie with popcorn and Coke, then the tape will do. In the meantime, I'll watch the first movie again. Exclusive bookmaker offers, free bets, and the latest promotional codes. Search for premier welcome bonuses to reputable bookmakers.
